For females- they are wider in there body and have small to no cloaca.

How long do axolotls live for?

Axolotls tend to live 10-15 years in captivity in some cases up to 25 years

How offen do i feed an axolotl?

For an adult axolotls feeding is recommended once a day or every second day.

Do axolotls need a cave?

Yes, we recommend to add a cave as axolotls prefer small dark spaces to hide. Axolotls can become stressed and will need a safe space to hide away.

What filtration do I need?

The best filtration set up to have is, one or two sponge filters and a canister filter that goes through a chiller back into the tank and it’s important to match the litres per hour to the chillers capabilities as this makes sure it runs efficiently. The chiller will have a recommended litres per hour in its specifications. The sponge filters can be squeezed in aged tank water to make sure you’re not getting rid of the beneficial bacteria every six months or so and the canister filter can be cleaned in tank water every three months or so. Do not do both the sponge and canister filter cleaning at the same time as this can cause a crash in beneficial bacteria.

How offen do I need to change the water?

We recommend you change the water every fortnight but only take 30%. This provides fresh water but also keep in good bacteria for tank balance. Always add conditioner to the water, We recommend/use Prime.

  • WARNING: check what is suitable for axolotl as some fish tank conditioners contain aloe vera, which is harmful to axolotls.

Do they need a light?

No, axolotls do not have eyelids and are sensitive light. Having a low dimmed light or natural light for small amounts a day is okay but axolotls prefer a dark environment.
